Cross-Border Commerce Europe publishes the second edition of the “TOP 500 Cross-Border Retail Europe”: an annual ranking of the best 500 European cross-border online shops.

Cross-Border Commerce Europe, the platform that stimulates cross-border eCommerce in Europe, releases a major research paper covering and ranking the 500 strongest European players with a focus on cross-border performance. The total online EU cross-border market represents a turnover of €108.75 billion in 2019 (excluding travel). In this second edition of the “TOP 500 Cross-Border Retail Europe”, Ikea takes the leading position. A study produced by CBCommerce with the support of FedEx Express and Worldline. 

The ‘Top 500 Cross-Border Retail Europe’ edition is a major compilation of cross-border data from websites of European retailers. Ranking is obtained by weighting four parameters:

• Online cross-border sales in Europe (16 countries within Western Europe and Scandinavia)
• SEO-indicators covering cross-border performance
• Cross-border score determined on the amount of active countries
• Amount and percentage of cross-border visitors

There are six additional secondary weighted parameters that fine-tune the ranking:

• Brand authority
• Organic search percentage
• Number of languages
• Number of currencies
• Number of payment methods
• Local supply availability (transport and stock services)

Based on the above-mentioned methodology, the Top 10 “Elite” retailers for 2019 are:

– Top 1: Ikea
– Top 2: H&M
– Top 3: Zara
– Top 4: Lego
– Top 5: Nespresso
– Top 6: C&A
– Top 7: Zalando
– Top 8: Vivino
– Top 9: Smyths Toys
– Top 10: Tomtom

The new entrants to this TOP 10 are Lego, C&A, Smyth Toys and Tomtom. Leavers are Pandora, Thomann, Jack & Jones and Swarovski.

In 2019 Cross-border e-commerce revenues (excluding travel) reached € 108.75 billion in Europe; an increase of 14.4% compared to 2018. The cross-border share is 23.55% of total online sales in Europe (EU16).

Cross-border trade (excluding travel) has the following distribution: 55% is generated by players from within the European Union and 45% by retailers from outside the EU. The market share of players inside the EU has increased by 3% compared to 2018.

Within the EU16, € 39.7 billion is generated by the Top 500 Cross-Border Retail Europe “made in Europe” which represents a market share of 63% of the total cross-border eCommerce market in Europe with an increase in sales of 10.2% compared to 2018.

Ikea, the leader of this TOP 500 ranking, progresses by one place. It achieved cross-border turnover of € 4.6 billion, an increase of 21% compared to the leader in 2018. Looking at the bottom of the ranking, Decitre takes position nr 500 with a turnover of € 2.65 million, an increase of 20.4% compared to 2018. The barrier to entry to this TOP 500 is therefore much higher than in 2018 (€ 2.2 million).

In this TOP 500 ranking, 25 Marketplaces represent a turnover of € 10.5 billion in 2019 or 26.4% of total sales and an increase of 17% compared to 2018. This segment which is growing faster than the average market, is one of the big winners for this edition.

Regarding retailers outside the European Union, 80% of cross-border sales are generated through ‘marketplaces’ with Amazon as leader with its € 32 billion sales.

28% of Europeans appreciate the convenience of cross-border eCommerce. Despite the Brexit and the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, they firmly believe in a promising future for cross-border e-commerce in Europe.
