ReCommerce marketplaces outperform the broader retail market. OLX, TOP100 winner “Sustainable Cross-Border Marketplaces Operating in Europe”, excels in ReCommerce, selling used, second-hand, refurbished and repurposed items.

Brussels, 25th January 2024 – ReCommerce is projected to grow 5x faster than the overall retail market by 2025. Online classifieds marketplaces are significant contributors to second-hand trade and the circular economy.

In 2022/23, the EU ReCommerce market was valued at €94B, expected to grow to €120B by 2025 (a 27% increase). Over the next three years, the ReCommerce market share (versus eCommerce) is projected to increase from 12.3% to 14%.

This study was carried out by Cross-Border Commerce Europe with support from FedEx Express and Poste Italiane.

The relatively new term ‘ReCommerce’ has made a significant impact in the retail industry, which traditionally struggled with unrecycled goods and landfilled waste. By valuing pre-owned or secondhand goods, ReCommerce Marketplaces are phasing out unproductive business models and championing the circular economy, where unused or second-hand products are sold, refurbished, or recycled. From fashion and home furniture to books, cars and consumer electronics, ReCommerce solutions like repair, remanufacture, rental services, reconditioning, refurbishing and resale are transforming the traditional linear retail industry. ‘Ecological ReCommerce’ specifically focuses on collecting used items to repair or recycle and resell as reconditioned products.

Secondhand shopping is rising in popularity and status:

• 85% of shoppers have bought or sold used goods in the past year, with 27% doing so for the first time.
• 75% of Recommerce transactions occur in categories beyond clothing, including electronics, furniture, household items, books, sporting goods, outdoor equipment, and cars.
• 76% of shoppers believe that the stigma around secondhand shopping has decreased and 41% say that buying secondhand is now a status symbol.
• 69% of shoppers have used the money they earned from reselling items to pay bills or cover daily living expenses, and 39% say reselling has helped them make ends meet.

While high prices persist, the primary motivation for buying secondhand remains value-driven: consumers are seeking to maintain their desired lifestyle within their budget constraints.

In Europe, many turn to resale (second-hand shopping) as a way to manage their finances more effectively: 69% of sellers used the earnings from resold items to pay bills or daily living expenses.

Comparison with the Top 100 Marketplaces 2022/23 Ranking: We recognise six major Top 100 Cross-Border (CB) marketplaces that stand out from the Top 100 CB sustainable marketplaces: AliExpress, Temu, Wish, DHGATE, Joom and Taobao (China). The main reason behind this shift is the carbon-intensive nature of the intercontinental logistics business model. Moreover, well-known entities such as Amazon, Zalando and Fruugo have recorded lower sustainability performance, resulting in a decline in their sustainability eRank.

Is ReCommerce sustainability truly sustainable?

While reselling is a positive step, its benefits could be limited if buyers choose second hand clothes in addition to, rather than instead of, new outfits. Rentals could be more detrimental to the environment, primarily due to the transportation involved in exchanging shared goods. Online P2P rental platforms offering multi-category fashion products promote sustainability but also increase ‘last mile’ logistics routes for cleaning services.
