First edition of a European Compendium dedicated to Cross-Border E-Commerce’s model in the “NEXT new normal” across Europe.

Cross-Border Commerce Europe launches the first edition of a European Compendium dedicated to Cross-Border E-Commerce’s model in the “NEXT new normal” across Europe. A collection of seven annual Blue Paper reports compiled by 70 EU leading C-Level executives’ retailers.

Brussels – November 25th, 2021. Cross-Border Commerce Europe, the platform that drives cross-border e-commerce in Europe, launches a compendium that maps how will Cross-Border e-Commerce be defined in the NEXT new normal across Europe in the year to come. A collection of seven annual Blue Paper reports on strategic topics like Customer Centricity, Green Supply Chain, Marketplaces and Sustainability and channel-related fields such as Brands Direct-to-Consumer, Omnichannel and Scale-Ups. A Compendium carried out by 70 C-Level Retail executives under the auspice of CBCommerce with support from APG, DPDgroup, FedEx Express, Genesys, Octopia and Seven Senders.

The COVID pandemic had a major impact on retailers. Quick adaptation must embrace or drive the change and bounce back to the new normal.

“CBCommerceNEXT Compendium” results from 6 round table brainstorming sessions by 7 groups gathering 10 International C-Level Retail executives in each High Level Group.  Representing all sectors and EU countries, they are guided by a chairman having an academic and consulting experience background. All executives are highly reputed experts. Those seven High Level Groups gathered during the whole year 2021 to define the “NEXT new normal” across Europe regarding:

  • Brands Direct-to-Consumer
  • Customer Centricity
  • Green Supply Chain
  • Marketplaces
  • Omnichannel
  • Scale-Ups
  • Sustainability

A 20-page Blue Paper compiled by each High Level Group summarizes the learnings and recommendations bringing insights and best practices cases as stimulation for radical innovation and tangible action in the European e-commerce industry.  The views expressed by those Retail executives are their own take-aways and do not necessarily reflect the official positions of their companies.

You will find hereunder some first learnings wrapped up by each Chairman:

Internationalization of a Brands Direct-to-Consumer business is easier and quicker than building up national distribution networks

“The shift to Brands Direct-to-Consumer is largely driven by emerging customer demand for brands. Out of the TOP 500 Cross-Border European retailers, 96 or 19% are brand manufacturers that sent their products directly to consumers in 2020. The more the European market is harmonized in regulating online retail, easier it is to expand across borders resulting in lower prices to end customers”, declared the Chairman Oliver Lucas.

Customer Centricity is a commitment or strategy to ensure customers’ success.Measurement of customer centricity goes beyond looking at traditional KPIs as NPS or CSAT

It requires a continuous reflection on the way a company structures, operates and drive customer-centric employee behavior as a management principle. Empathy has become increasingly important for organizations to connect to customers’ insights, perspective and feedback.

With transport and logistics accounting for ca. 25% of greenhouse gas emissions, a Green Supply Chain strategy should play a pivotal role even in this COVID-19 supply chain storm

“e-Commerce companies are urged to make environmental sustainability an explicit building block of their supply chain strategy. This can be achieved through more collaboration of all upstream and downstream partners and their logistics providers. These last will play an essential role in the greening of the e-commerce sector”, confirmed Chairmen Sven Verstrepen and Roel Gevaers.

Brands and retailers have to develop their own Marketplaces and therefore EU regulations should be adapted to the marketplace size and business model

“Launching its own cross-border marketplace will create additional revenue streams and increase overall platform conversion. It will increase in assortment without investing or blocking major working capital in stock. This means diversifying and trialing new categories. A mapping of the key parameters of European cross-border marketplaces for onboarding sellers can also be found in this Blue Paper report”, declared Chairman Prof. Dr. Christian Stummeyer.

During this post pandemic landscape, traditional bricks retailers are acknowledging the importance of being Omnichannel and become one connected channel

“In a first step, e-commerce and stores get connected with customers getting to live seamless experiences, sales assistant’s role becomes more relevant, connected warehouses are introduced and retailers pay attention to e-commerce analytics to be used along with the      in-store customer data. In a second step, stores become an extension of e-commerce. Retailers get to the point where they can give customers what they want, where/when they want, as they want”, stated Chairman Dimas Gimeno.

Scale-Ups are facing multiple forms of obstacles going cross-border. A major one is fraud

“A pan-European support for a continuous exchange of intelligence amongst European commerce providers, possibly in combination with the Law Enforcement Agencies of the Member States and Europol is recommended. Special attention should be given to the overall infrastructure improvement for online identities to be better connected to physical entities, strengthening the overall trust and reducing the impact of fraud. As long as online fraudsters can hide behind hidden IP addresses and various virtual accounts, it will be a challenge to identify them and to finally prosecute them”, concludes Chairman Ulrich Seldeslachts.

Sustainability. Soon, companies will have to comply with the next regulatory European framework which includes 14 indicators to assess their environmental impact and products

“As the EU is putting strict legislation in place to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, companies will be required to step up or to be penalized. Retailers need to discover a multi-criteria measure of the environmental performance of a good or service throughout its life cycle. A pragmatic approach should be implemented taking into account both climate change and decline in ecosystems and biodiversity”, confirmed Chairwoman Valérie Tiersen.

I would like to thank our 70 International Retail C-Level executives members, Chairmen and Chairwomen as well as our Knowledge Partners APG, DPDgroup, FedEx Express, Genesys, Octopia and Seven Senders who put all their energy behind this eagerly awaited CBCommerceNEXT Compendium. It acts as an inspirational document gathering the best strategies and best European practices cases defining the NEXT for the entire sector”, concludes Carine Moitier, the founder of CBCommerce.eu
