The European consumer electronics sector continues to operate in a complex global environment affected by inflationary pressure, geopolitical instability, supply chain disruptions, and renewed trade tensions between major economies. Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, combined with strategic competition between the United States and China, continue to impact manufacturing, sourcing, logistics, and pricing structures throughout the global electronics industry.

At the same time, the sector is entering an innovation cycle driven by artificial intelligence, connected ecosystems, smart devices, and premium replacement demand. Consumers across Europe are prioritizing products with AI capabilities, energy efficiency, ecosystem integration, repairability, and longer lifecycle value. These developments are impacting both consumers purchasing behaviour and retailer strategies across the European 3C market.

On average, consumer electronics retailers generate nearly half (46.6%) of their revenues from the 3C category — Computers, Communications, and Consumer Electronics — while the remaining turnover is generated through household appliances and white goods.

Despite macroeconomic challenges, online consumer electronics sales continue to outperform the broader retail market. The European online consumer electronics market is currently valued at €112 billion and is projected to reach €117 billion by end 2026. This growth is supported by cross-border commerce, marketplace ecosystems, and the accelerating expansion of refurbished and recommerce-driven business models.

By the end of 2026, more than half of total European consumer electronics revenue (€117 billion out of €220 billion) is expected to be generated online. Cross-border sales alone are projected to account for approximately 47% of total online consumer electronics turnover, representing nearly €55 billion in cross-border trade value.

Representing 13% of total European online retail sales across all categories, the online consumer electronics sector remains the second-largest e-commerce category in Europe, following fashion.

Leading Parent Companies and Holdings

Ceconomy remains Europe’s leading consumer electronics retail holding through MediaMarkt and Saturn, operating more than 1,000 stores and a rapidly expanding omnichannel ecosystem across Europe. The company continues investing in AI-driven retail technologies, marketplace expansion, fulfillment optimization, and services integration.

Currys PLC continues consolidating its Nordic and UK operations under a unified omnichannel strategy, while United-b Group strengthens its position through recommerce-focused investments including Recommerce, Circular-X, and ElectroDepot.

Outlook 2026–2027

The global consumer electronics industry is entering a new phase characterized by geopolitical fragmentation, regionalized supply chains, artificial intelligence integration, and rapidly evolving consumer expectations.

Renewed U.S. trade measures targeting Chinese technology imports continue creating uncertainty for global sourcing and pricing structures. These developments are expected to accelerate supply chain diversification strategies among manufacturers, retailers, and marketplace operators.

At the same time, European consumers remain highly engaged with online purchasing channels. AI-powered shopping experiences, mobile commerce, social commerce, personalized retail ecosystems, and cross-border marketplace models are expected to further strengthen online consumer electronics growth over the coming years.

Although economic volatility and geopolitical risks will continue creating short-term pressure on the market, the long-term outlook for the European online 3C sector remains highly positive. Companies capable of combining technological innovation, operational flexibility, sustainability, and strong customer trust will be best positioned to capture future growth opportunities in Europe’s evolving digital retail landscape.
